« Happy International Champagne Day »

In honour of Friday, October 26, 2012 - otherwise known as International Champagne Day - a few of my favourite quotes. First up, some wise women:

I only drink Champagne when I'm happy, and when I'm sad. Sometimes I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company, I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I am not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it - unless I'm thirsty." ~ Lily Bollinger

Three be the things I shall never attain:  envy, content, and sufficient Champagne." ~ Dorothy Parker

There comes a time in every woman's life when the only thing that helps is a glass of Champagne." ~ Kit Marlowe, Bette Davis character in Old Acquaintance

And some more classics:
Burgundy makes you think of silly things, Bordeaux makes you talk about them, and Champagne makes you do them." ~ Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin
My only regret in life is that I did not drink more Champagne." ~ John Maynard Keynes
In victory, you deserve champagne, in defeat, you need it." ~ Napoleon

A few slightly more obscure quotes:

Champagne for my real friends and real pain for my sham friends." ~ Tom Waits

I like Champagne because it always tastes as if my foot's asleep." ~ Art Buchwald

Le Champagne ne se boit pas, il se déguste. Il ne faut pas l'avaler goulûment. On doit le déguster avec mesure dans des verres étroits, à gorgées espacées etréfléchies." ~ Colette

Before I was born my mother was in great agony of spirit and in a tragic situation. She could take no food except iced oysters and Champagne. If people ask me when I began to dance, I reply, 'In my mother's womb, probably as a result of the oysters and Champagne - the food of Aphrodite.'" ~ Isadora Duncan

We lived very simply - but with all the essentials of life well understood and provided for - hot baths, cold Champagne, new peas and old brandy." ~ Winston Churchill

In a perfect world, everyone would have a glass of Champagne every evening." ~ Willie Gluckstern

Champagne, if you are seeking the truth, is better than a lie detector. It encourages a man to be expansive, even reckless, while lie detectors are only a challenge to tell lies successfully." ~ Graham Greene

He who doesn't risk never gets to drink champagne." ~ Russian proverb

Here's to Champagne, the drink divine, that makes us forget all our troubles; It's made of a dollar's worth of wine, and three dollars worth of bubbles." ~ Anonymous

Pour the Champagne and let its mousse rise, like thousands of sparkling smiling eyes." ~ Jared M. Brown

Champagne? I never touch it. Not directly, anyway. I always use a glass." ~ Anistatia R. Miller

It's very hard to pick my favourite, but this just may be it:

Too much of anything is bad, but too much Champagne is just right." ~ Mark Twain
